What is an API?

An Application Programming Interface (API) is a defined set of Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) request messages, each with defined structured responses. These responses are often an XML (eXtensible Markup Language) or JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format. In internet development terms, "Web API" is usually a synonym for Web Service. Recent trends have been moving away from Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) based services towards more direct Representational State Transfer (REST) style communications.

The FindaportAPI is a RESTful Web API with responses returned in XML, JSON, HTML, KML and RSS formats.
